I had the opportunity last week to join my fellow Johnson County legislators in a meeting with our local school superintendents. The superintendents in attendance were Kent DeKoninck from Greenwood Community Schools , David Clendening from Franklin Community Schools and Patrick Spray from Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation.
Pictured (from left to right) is Dr. Clendening, Rep. Price, Rep. Burton, Rep. Koch, Dr. DeKoninck and Dr. Spray.
This was a very positive meeting in which we had a good exchange of information and ideas. We talked about the impact of circuit breaker property tax caps, accountability, in regards to the A-F grading system, and school choice scholarships. We also discussed putting a greater focus on technical and associate degrees.
Dr. Clendening shared about Franklin’s project based education program and Dr. DeKoninck detailed the Greenwood senior project which brings together all aspects of learning in a practical application. Dr. Spray introduced us to the Warrior Wardrobe program at Whiteland Community High School. This program provides new and gently used clothing, toiletries and accessories for WCHS students in need. I think this is a great idea!
I was grateful for the opportunity to sit down with the education leaders in Johnson County, and I look forward to continuing to partner with them in the education of our young Hoosiers.
